The look
What makes a modern front yard
Modern front yards are about a clear, generous path to the door and a few bold planting areas. Large pavers or poured concrete, steel or concrete edging, and a limited plant palette repeated across the yard give it a calm, deliberate look.
It pairs naturally with contemporary and mid-century houses, and it can update a traditional one too if the materials pick up the house colors. Lighting along the path finishes it at night.
Clean lines, structured planting. Colors: charcoal, sand, deep green. Materials: large-format pavers, corten steel, ornamental grasses.
- A wide paved path or stepping pads set in gravel
- Steel, concrete or stone edging for crisp bed lines
- Ornamental grasses, clipped shrubs and one or two feature trees
- Modern house numbers, a mailbox and a front door that match
- Low path lights and uplighting on a tree or the facade

Before you build
Worth knowing first
- Make the path at least wide enough for two people to walk side by side; a mean path looks wrong in a modern scheme.
- Keep planting below the windowsills so it frames the house instead of hiding it.
- Check local rules on how much of the front yard can be paved before swapping lawn for hardscape.
Each design can come with an estimated cost range for your zip code, so you get a rough idea of the budget before asking for quotes. How the estimate works
