A patio, a fire pit, more privacy, less lawn to mow. It is hard to picture any of them in your own space from someone else’s photo. Pick an idea and try it on yours.

Clean lines, big pavers and planting in blocks. A modern backyard looks simple, which is exactly why the proportions have to be right. See it on your own yard first.
Warm stone, gravel underfoot, olive and lavender, and a long table in the shade. It is relaxed, and it copes well with sun and dry summers.
Decomposed granite, sculptural plants and boulders. A desert-modern yard needs little water and little mowing, and still looks designed.
Gravel, stone, moss and a maple. A Japanese-style garden is about restraint and balance, and it can work in a small yard as well as a large one.
Brick paths, roses over an arch and borders full of flowers. A cottage garden looks effortless, but it relies on a clear structure underneath.
Big leaves, layered greens, teak and stone. A tropical backyard feels like a holiday, and it hides fences and neighbours well.
Where to start
Good backyards are usually split into a few areas with a job each: somewhere to eat, somewhere to sit, and planting that softens the fence line. Deciding which areas you need comes before choosing materials.
Shoot from a back corner or an upstairs window so the whole yard is in frame. Fences, neighbouring houses and mature trees stay where they are in your design.
