The look
What makes a Mediterranean backyard
A Mediterranean backyard trades lawn for gravel and stone, uses silver-leaved plants that like sun and sharp drainage, and puts a shaded place to eat at its center. Terracotta pots, a pergola with a climber, and a wall or bench in warm render pull it together.
It is at home in hot, dry climates and fits small yards well. In colder or wetter areas, pick hardy lookalikes for the planting and make sure the gravel areas drain.
Sun-warmed and relaxed. Colors: terracotta, silver-green, cream. Materials: terracotta, gravel, olive trees, lavender.
- Gravel or decomposed granite in place of most of the lawn
- Olive, fig or bay trees, lavender, rosemary and other silver-leaved planting
- Terracotta pots and tiles, and warm limestone or sandstone paving
- A pergola with vines or a climber over the dining table
- Whitewashed or warm-rendered walls, and wrought iron details

Before you build
Worth knowing first
- Lay a weed membrane and a compacted base under gravel, or it will migrate into the house and the beds.
- Mediterranean plants want drainage more than water. Mix grit into heavy soil or raise the beds.
- Check that your chosen trees are hardy in your area before you fall for the photo.
Each design can come with an estimated cost range for your zip code, so you get a rough idea of the budget before asking for quotes. How the estimate works
