The look
What makes a tropical backyard
Tropical gardens layer plants by height: palms or tall bamboo at the back, large-leaved plants in the middle and lush ground cover at the front, so the boundaries disappear. Natural stone, teak furniture and a water feature or pool complete the resort feel.
True tropical plants need warmth and humidity. In cooler areas the same look comes from hardy palms, large-leaved perennials and evergreen ferns that survive the winter.
Lush, holiday-at-home feel. Colors: deep green, teak, white. Materials: palms, teak, natural stone, large-leaf planting.
- Palms, banana plants, bird of paradise or hardy large-leaved lookalikes
- Dense layered planting that hides fences and walls
- Natural stone paving or timber decking
- Teak loungers, daybeds and outdoor fabrics in white and green
- Water: a pool, a plunge pool or a simple wall fountain

Before you build
Worth knowing first
- Check frost hardiness. Many tropical-looking plants need winter protection or a sheltered spot.
- Big-leaf planting needs water; group thirsty plants together on their own irrigation zone.
- Leave clear space around pools and paths, because tropical planting grows fast.
Each design can come with an estimated cost range for your zip code, so you get a rough idea of the budget before asking for quotes. How the estimate works
