The look
What makes a Japanese backyard
Japanese-inspired gardens use few elements, placed with care: a stepping-stone path that slows you down, raked gravel or moss as open ground, a single specimen tree such as a Japanese maple, and stone or water as a focal point. Asymmetry and empty space do a lot of the work.
It is a garden for looking at as much as for using, so it suits a view from a window or a quiet corner beside a deck. Choose evergreen structure so it still looks good in winter.
Calm, contemplative balance. Colors: moss green, slate, maple red. Materials: raked gravel, moss, maples, stepping stones.
- Raked gravel or moss as open ground
- Stepping stones and a path that turns, so the garden reveals itself slowly
- A Japanese maple, pine or other single specimen tree
- Natural stone, a stone lantern or a basin as a focal point
- Bamboo screening, clipped shrubs and ferns in shade

Before you build
Worth knowing first
- Use clumping bamboo or a root barrier; running bamboo spreads aggressively into neighbouring yards.
- Japanese maples prefer shelter from harsh afternoon sun and wind in hot climates.
- Fewer, larger stones look more natural than many small ones. Bury a third of each stone.
Each design can come with an estimated cost range for your zip code, so you get a rough idea of the budget before asking for quotes. How the estimate works
