    Choosing exterior colors

    Start from what stays
    The roof, brick, stone and windows are the expensive parts to change. Pick colors that suit them, not the other way round.
    Test in real light
    Paint a large sample board and look at it in the morning, at midday and in the evening. Exterior colors look lighter outside than on a chip.
    Use contrast on purpose
    Trim lighter or darker than the siding outlines the windows. Trim the same color as the siding makes the house look simpler and more modern.
    Check the rules first
    If you have a homeowners association or live in a historic district, check which colors are allowed before you buy paint.
