What makes a contemporary exterior
Contemporary exteriors use a few flat, clean materials: smooth stucco or render in white or grey, vertical or horizontal wood cladding as an accent, and dark metal for windows, railings and lights. Decoration is removed, and the shape of the house does the talking.
It is a popular update for 1970s to 1990s houses. Cladding one section, like the entrance or an upper floor, often gives most of the effect.

Worth knowing first
- Real wood cladding needs regular oiling; composite or fibre cement gives the look with less upkeep.
- Render over brick needs the right base coat; ask a specialist.
