The look
What makes a dark kitchen
Dark kitchens use deep colors like black, charcoal, navy or forest green on the cabinets, set against stone counters and warm metals such as brass or bronze. Good lighting and one lighter surface, often the counter or backsplash, keep the room from feeling closed in.
It works best in kitchens with decent daylight, or when the dark color is used on the lower cabinets or the island only. Trying it on a photo first is the easiest way to decide how much is too much.
Moody sophistication. Colors: charcoal, espresso, bronze. Materials: dark oak, matte black, leather.
- Black, charcoal, navy or deep green cabinets
- Marble, quartz or stone counters, often lighter than the cabinets
- Brass, bronze or warm metal hardware and lights
- Warm under-cabinet and pendant lighting
- Wood accents on the floor, shelves or island

Before you build
Worth knowing first
- Matte dark paints show fingerprints and scuffs; a washable eggshell or satin finish lasts better.
- Start with the island or lower cabinets dark and the uppers light if the room is small.
- Plan the lighting before the paint: dark kitchens need good task light.
Each design can come with an estimated cost range for your zip code, so you get a rough idea of the budget before asking for quotes. How the estimate works
