The look
What makes a Japandi kitchen
Japandi kitchens are built from natural wood like ash or oak, handleless or slim-handled cabinets, and muted colors such as oatmeal, sage and charcoal. Ceramics, stone and linen add texture, and storage is planned so the counters stay almost empty.
It is darker and warmer than a Scandinavian kitchen and less fussy than a farmhouse one. Choose one wood tone and repeat it, rather than mixing several.
Japanese-Nordic serenity. Colors: oatmeal, sage, ink. Materials: ash, ceramic, linen.
- Ash, oak or wood-veneer cabinets, often handleless
- Muted counters in stone, concrete or matte quartz
- Handmade-look ceramic tile or a plain plaster backsplash
- Low, warm lighting and a simple paper or wood pendant
- Hidden storage so counters stay clear

Before you build
Worth knowing first
- Handleless doors need push latches or a routed edge; check how they work with heavy drawers.
- Matte finishes show fingerprints less, which matters in a minimal kitchen.
- Keep the color palette to two or three tones plus wood.
Each design can come with an estimated cost range for your zip code, so you get a rough idea of the budget before asking for quotes. How the estimate works
